A Conversation With Opal Lee: Juneteenth and the Constitution

Join Ms. Opal Lee, the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” for a special Constitution Day celebration exploring themes of freedom, equality, and storytelling through video, portraiture, and interactive discussions.  There will be opportunity to ask Ms. Opal Lee questions about her life, her role in establishing Juneteenth as a national holiday, and her lifelong commitment to pursuing freedom and equality for all. 

Presented in partnership with the Annenberg Classroom, National Portrait Gallery, and National Constitution Center.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with an examination of debates over slavery
2. We will then view a video about Juneteenth
3. We will analyze a portrait of Opal Lee
4. We will hear from Opal Lee
5. The program will end with Q&A.

Objectives

The participant will:
- explore the debates about slavery at the Consitutional Convention
- develop an understanding of the history of Juneteenth
- sharpen analytic and visual looking skills
-examine the theme of freedom
