During WWII, the American battleship USS North
Carolina (BB-55) participated in every major naval offensive in the
Pacific theater of operations, earning 15 battle stars. In 1961, the
decommissioned ship was brought to Wilmington, North Carolina thanks to the
efforts of donors (including students) all across the state. Today, this
authentically restored National Historic Landmark and museum proudly serves as
her State’s World War II Memorial to the 11,000+ North Carolinians who made the
ultimate sacrifice. Every year, thousands of school students visit us for field
trips to tour the historic vessel. Now we are excited to bring the battleship
to you through virtual programs tailored to meet the needs of K-12 learners and
educators!

Battleship Buoyancy and Beyond

In this live program, students will explore buoyancy and other math/science calculations that go into ship design—including that of the battleship USS North Carolina—using historical examples and hands on demonstrations.

The Art of War: Posters and Propaganda in WWII

Some battles are fought with pens and paintbrushes! Participants analyze the historical context and appeals of American propaganda and recruiting posters, particularly from WWII, before creating their own targeted toward their generation.
