This program is based on the book, Tech Titans, by Carla Killough McClafferty.
Bill Gates dreamed one day there would be a computer in every home.
Steve Jobs put a computer in our phones.
Jeff Bezos turned our computer into a store.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin used a computer to put the world’s knowledge at our fingertips.
Mark Zuckerberg designed a way to use our computer to stay in touch with friends.
No doubt about it, these six men changed the modern world. But HOW did they do it?
In this interactive session we will look into the lives of these six men to see similarities in their lives-and differences too. We will discuss the mega minds of Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook to find out where they came from, what they did, and how they did it.

This fun program fits the objective of Common Core State Standards as it focuses on complex text and ideas across the curriculum including language arts, history/social studies, science and technical subjects.

Program Details

Format

1. We will begin by discussing the constant use of computers in our lives today. I will remind them that the internet was not always around (which is hard for them to imagine). This will set them up to understand the huge jump of technology each of these men took as they revolutionized the industry.
2. While looking at photographs, we will discuss each of the six men included in Tech Titans: Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Mark Zuckerberg. In each case we will interact about how their families, location, and work ethic influenced each of them.
3. We will also discuss the progression of technology through the years as each man built upon the foundation of those who came before him. We will discuss what might be next, and what they would like to see developed.
4. Time will be given for questions and answers about the Tech Titans, my research, or writing.

Objectives

1. The participant will gain knowledge about the lives and work of six American men who have changed our culture.
2. The participant will learn how each man created a successful computer empire by building on the foundation of others who came before them.
3. The participant will understand that science and technology has no end. Leave them considering the possibility that the next Bill Gates could be sitting in their classroom—perhaps they themselves will be the next person who will change the world.
