Creative Writing Methods for Non-Fiction Subjects

Are your students reluctant writers when it comes to
non-fiction topics? Use these unique, yet easy and fun writing and art
methods of cutting paper objects, draw and folding, using sign language or creating tangram
objects to get them writing!  Your students will learn how to use these
creative writing and art methods to demonstrate their understanding of a
concept related to
science, social studies, literature, or a vocabulary term. Students can
create their own personal narrative relating to these subjects!


OR - This program can be for "Teachers Only."  If you are interested
in a cross curriculum creative writing program for a Teacher In-Service
Meeting, this presentation is the one for your school! Valerie will
discuss ways to incorporate creative writing into all discipline areas and all grade levels.

     Valerie is the author of 13 storytelling books, a writing teacher, and storyteller. Her books include Paper Cutting Stories A to Z, A Treasury of Trickster Tales, Mystery-Fold: Stories to Tell, Draw, and Fold, and Story Puzzles: Tales in the Tangram Tradition. Other books include Paper Cutting Stories for Holidays, Puppet Tales, and True Tales of Heroes & Heroines.
     Valerie uses unique ways to tell tales for all ages including "Paper-Cutting" (fold and cut), "Mystery-Fold" (draw and tell), "Story Puzzles" (creating tangram objects), and Sign Language. She offers a wide variety of programs for students of all ages, as well as professional development workshops for teachers. Her writing methods are easy, involve audience participation, and engage students! No matter which program you request, Valerie tailors her program to your students! Easy and fun!
      Miss Liz the Science Wiz joins Valerie for our Action Science programs. Miss Liz uses puppets, sign language and action to anchor basic scientific facts presented in our programs. Miss Liz will have your students acting out all kinds of physical and life science concepts!

Program Details

Format

1. Valerie will demonstrate several ways to incorporate writing into curriculum using the unique methods of paper-cutting, draw and tell, tangram objects, and a One Minute Story.
2. Students will choose a vocabulary word or concept from a list supplied previously by their classroom teacher.
3. Students will apply one of the methods to write about their concept.
4. Students will share their ideas.
5. Valerie will discuss the students' ideas with them.
6. Q and A if time permits.

Students or teachers will need several sheets of paper, scissors and, if we are using tangrams, a pre-cut tangram set, a glue stick and a pencil please.

Objectives

Students will:
-incorporate art into their writing
- be motivated to try a different way of writing as it relates to their science, or social studies concepts or vocabulary words.
- choose a current vocabulary word or concept to write about
- engage in one of the demonstrated creative writing techniques
- demonstrate their understanding of the concept.
- use one of the presented art methods to demonstrate a concept or vocabulary word
