Format
1. This program begins with a discussion on protecting personal information including building a strong password and deciding what is and is not appropriate to share online.
2. We then discuss how social media and cyberbullying can affect a person’s mental health. A Fact or Fake game will help illustrate statistics around cyberbullying.
3. We then look at protecting a person’s reputation online including what to do if theirs becomes damaged. Students will watch a video about the harms of sexting.
4. Participants then discuss how excessive media use can lead to less physical activity. Students will list activities they could engage in not using a device.
5. Lastly, we will look at some of the dangers of the internet including viewing hate speech, sexually explicit content, and online predators. The students will learn if something makes them uncomfortable online, they should tell a trusted adult.
Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the student will be able to:
1. State four aspects to staying safe online.
2. Describe the components necessary to create a safe password.
3. State that a password should be changed every six months to retain online safety.
4. Identify at least four ways to protect online reputation.
5. Explain how excessive media consumption may affect a person’s physical and mental health.
6. State steps to take when witnessing cyberbullying while online.
7. State steps to take when becoming the target of cyberbullying.
8. Predict the consequences of a lack of internet safety.
9. List resources available if feeling endangered or uncomfortable from an interaction on the internet.
