     Combine science, literacy and sign language in this Action
Science program! Your students solve a folktale riddle story about butterflies and flowers. Then they 'fly' their paper butterfly around to 'exchange
pollen' with the 'flowers'. Next, they 'dance' a honeybee Waggle Dance to
communicate with their bee friends, and 'drink' using a proboscis. Hands-on interactive learning!

     Valerie uses unique ways to tell tales for all ages including "Paper-Cutting" (fold and cut), "Mystery-Fold" (draw and fold), "Story Puzzles" (creating tangram figures), and Sign Language, She offers workshops for students, and professional development for teachers. Her story methods are easy, involve audience participation and get kids excited about writing! No matter which program you request, Valerie tailors her program to your class! Easy and fun!
      Miss Liz Science Wiz joins Valerie for the Action Science programs. Miss Liz uses puppets and physical actions to anchor basic scientific facts presented in our programs. Miss Liz will have your students acting out all kinds of physical and life science concepts!

Program Details

Format

1. Along with Valerie, students tell a folktale story about a pollinators. We introduce the sign language for flower, butterfly, bee, etc!!
2. We discuss the science of how pollination works.
3. Each student is either a butterfly or a flower. Everyone has several pieces of pollen (pom pom balls) and flies around trading their pollen for a different color of pollen. Then everyone switches roles.
4. We discover how butterflies use their proboscis and then act this out with a drinking straw.
5. We explore how bees communicate the location and distance of flowers to the other bees. Students act out this process which is called a Waggle Dance.
6. We review the story, explain how pollination works, and review the sign language.
7. Call to Action: How to be nice to insects! Plant flowers in your yard! Don't use chemicals.

Objectives

Students will be able to:
1. learn and are able to retell our folktale riddle story
2. apply their art skills to our butterfly project
3. understand and explain the concept of pollination and its importance
4. understand and explain the concept of the Waggle Dance as it relates to flower location
5. understand and explain the concept of the proboscis.
6. show and tell the meaning of the sign language for the words used in our lesson
