Pollinators Action Science: Butterflies & Bees Pollinate & Waggle Dance! Now You Do It!

from Author Valerie Marsh

Program image

Combine art, storytelling, and math for our Action Science program! We act out why pollinators are so important in our world. First, author Valerie Marsh
involves your students in a folktale about bees, butterflies and flowers.
Students use their art skills to cut out and add details to their 'pollinator' and then they 'fly' them around your room 'exchanging pollen" with the 'flowers'. Half your students are bees or butterflies and the other half are 'flowers. They do a Bee Waggle Dance to communicate to their fellow bees the location and distance to the flowers. As butterflies, they use a straw to 'drink' with their proboscis! We discuss how the pollinators are involved in the life cycle of seeds. Easy and fun! Don't worry - we'll mail you the 'pollen' (brightly colored pom poms), the proboscis (straw) and paper flowers!
