The CCSC’s distance learning programs give K-12 students hands-on, minds-on experiences with the natural world through digital technology. Guided by skilled environmental educators, your students will interact with each other in fun, practical ways to investigate science.

Program Details

Format

1. This program begins with an introduction to Alaska and the Campbell Creek Science Center.
2. Through a PowerPoint presentation, we will identify glacier types including icefields.
3. Watch videos of tidewater glaciers calving into the water.
4. Learn about the glacier ecosystem and discuss the different animals that live on and around it.
5. Create-A-Glacier—Critter—Using paper and a writing utensil, students will write or draw an imaginary critter that lives on a glacier.
6. Students will be able to share their critters and ask questions with the remaining time.

Objectives

Students will be able to define a glacier and identify three types of glaciers.

Students will be able to recognize tide water glaciers and describe glacier calving.

Students will explore the glacier ecosystem and identify two animals that live on or near the glacier.
