During this 45-60 minute videoconference, your students will be asked to use their senses to help them make observations about what is going on in the Challenger Science Lab. The Lab Director will encourage them use their five senses to make predictions, watch demonstrations, and record the outcomes on a lab journal. Your class will be separated into 5 teams.  These teams will represent four of the five senses (all but the sense of taste - we NEVER taste in a science lab) and an additional team will form to create our “Lab Safety Experts”.  There will be times during the videoconference that the Lab Director will ask for guidance from her Lab Safety Team about how to stay safe while performing science experiments.

Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling University (West Virginia)

Wheeling, WV
United States

In addition to offering award winning, state-of-the-art programs in a $500,000 space simulator, the Challenger Learning Center, thanks to technology, brings its innovative programs to distant classrooms around the world through its electronic distance-learning programs, known as e-Missions. The CLC flies more than 800 e-Missions for schools, many located in traditionally underserved districts, each year. We provide FREE Teacher Training sessions via video conference for any of our distance learning programs.

The Challenger Learning Center® also offers adult and student learners the chance to climb aboard a space station and complete a mission in the role of astronauts, scientists, and engineers with its Corporate Missions. A successful mission requires critical thinking, leadership, cooperation, and problem solving.

Program Details

1. Teams are issued a sense to be represent, one team represents lab safety.
2. Lab Safety discussed.
3. Teams use their assigned role to describe live experiments.
4.. Predict outcomes of experiments.
5.. Record observations and results on lab journal pages.

By the end of the lab experience, the students should understand that many experiences in our daily lives are multi-sensory where we use more than one sense at a time instead of each sense being used in isolation.
