This program highlights the newly reinstalled contemporary galleries of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which include diverse artists and fresh conversations among works in the museum’s collection. The works include contemporary re-imaginings of portraiture, recent takes on abstraction, and innovative adaptations of materials. Spanning the past six decades, the galleries feature longtime favorites by artists such as Andy Warhol, alongside the work of more recent artists, such as Simone Leigh.

Distance Learning for adult audiences at The Cleveland Museum of Art allows lifelong learners to connect with the CMA and enrich their studies of history and visual arts through our collection of art and artifacts from around the world. Through live, interactive videoconferencing, students participate in conversations with museum educators that are two-way and fully interactive.

Virtual learning for Pre-K–Grade-12 students offers connections
with the CMA collection through live, interactive video sessions with a
CMA educator. Explore artworks through discussion, writing, drawing,
and movement. Lessons are designed for grades Pre-K–Grade-12 and are designed to support standards.

Program Details

Format

1. Introduce themes of the contemporary galleries.
2. Discussion of works in the Color, Line and Shape area of the galleries.
3. Discussion of works in the Figure area of the galleries.
4. Discussion of works in the Found and Made area of the galleries.
5. Discussion of works in the Living Abstraction area of the galleries.

Objectives

Students will be able to discuss and analyze the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
Students will learn that there are diverse ways of expressing creativity through different media, moods, imagery and styles, including figurative and abstract.
Students will learn that a contemporary art is the product of a series of thoughtful, artistic decisions, even if it appears spontaneous or abstract.
