HOW TO SNEEZE! is a virtual author visit based on Alexandra Siy's award-winning picture book SNEEZE! Illuminating a sneeze with amazing scientific art and the experiences of a multicultural cast of kids, the book reveals why we sneeze and why we can’t stop a sneeze once it starts. A reading by the author coupled with a question and answer session will help participants understand the biology of sneezing and the importance of covering our faces to prevent the transmission of viruses and bacteria in order to stay safe.

This program is for everyone! Pre-K-adults!

Program Details

Format

Author introduces herself by removing her mask.
She asks students why it is safe for her to take off her mask.
Author reads a selection from SNEEZE! while showing the illustrations.
We then discuss scale of some of the specimens shown in the book.
We learn a new word: aerosol
We discuss how sneezing produces aerosols and how to protect ourselves from dangerous aerosols.
Older participants will learn about the anatomy of the sneeze reflex.
Presenter demonstrates how to sneeze from behind her mask and how to sanitize after a sneeze.
Time is allowed for questions and answers.

Objectives

Participants will
--discover what causes a sneeze
--explore the anatomy of a sneeze
--explore the scale of irritants and particles that cause sneezing
--learn about viruses and aerosols
--discuss how masks protect us from spreading aerosols
--practice how to sneeze and sanitize (only if participants are properly social distanced)
