Program Details

Format

Depending on participate needs, the format may change. However, the format usually falls under this structure:

1. Program begins with a welcome and introductions to Royal BC Museum, presenters, and an overview of program.
2. Leslie walks through the First Peoples gallery, stopping at exhibits to share stories and discuss First Peoples history with governance, self-government, treaty, and social issues.
3. Discuss the impact of trade, alcohol, disease, The Indian Act, The Potlatch Ban, Residential schools, and the 60s’ scoop
4. Explore current circumstances
5. Time is allowed for questions and answers throughout and at the end

Learners/Participants will:

• Appreciate the antiquity, diversity and self-determination of Indigenous cultures in BC
• Examine objects that illustrate Indigenous governance
• Understand the impact of contact, including smallpox and racist views on Indigenous populations
