Marty Chan's Secret Vault

by  Author Marty Chan

Program image

Imagine a virtual escape room where the kids have to break into a vault rather than break out. They'll use math skills to locate and open the secret vault. The kids will work in teams to solve the various math challenges. Find the right answer, and the kids get one step closer to the vault.  Combining tech tricks, production value, and math challenges, this interactive session will help teachers test the math knowledge of their students.

The problems are appropriate to the grade level of the participants in the sessions. There is a version for grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. When booking, please specify the math level of the class. If teachers have a specific math area they want to explore, Marty can tailor the challenges to fit.

Students will require pencils and paper to solve the problems.

Author Marty Chan

Edmonton, Alberta
Canada

Marty is an author and playwright. He’s written over 20 books for kids and nearly 100 plays for adults. He specializes in writing hi-lo fiction to encourage striving readers to pick up books. The Junior Library Guild awarded the gold medal standard to two of his novels: Haunted Hospital and Willpower. One of his early books, The Mystery of the Graffiti Ghoul, won the 2007 Diamond Willow Young Readers’ Choice Award.

Looking for a dynamic workshop on how to write scary stories? An engaging storytelling session to introduce young students to folktales and story structure? An inspiring book talk to get your reluctant readers excited to visit the library? Marty has a variety of sessions that cover Kindergarten to high school. He also provides professional development sessions for teachers who need extra help getting their students excited about creative writing.

From his virtual studio in Alberta, Canada, Marty delivers interactive writing workshops and author visits with a cutting-edge blend of special effects, humor, audience participation, writing games, and storytelling. Kids won’t be able to look away when Marty turns his pen into a lightsaber to illustrate how specifics matter. Younger students will be amazed at the behind-the-scenes look at how Marty’s picture book about his cats came together. Kids will scream their guesses at the screen as they play his version of ‘I Spy’ and learn the value of sensory details. He offers programs to schools, homeschool students, and the general public.

Since 2020, Marty has performed over 1,000 virtual sessions across North America. He can connect with classes and students via Zoom, Google Meet, MS Teams or YouTube Live.

Format

This is an interactive session that requires audience participation either through chat or with microphones.

Objectives

1. The program begins with an introduction to the origin of the Secret Vault and what it may contain.

2. Then the kids work in teams to solve a series of math puzzles to determine the location of the vault. They must decode five letters to spell out the country where the vault is hidden.

3. The students then travel virtually to the country and solve another series of math challenges to open the various locks that keep the vault shut. Each math puzzle tests the students' math knowledge for their grade level. (Note: each session is tailored to the math curriculum of grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Please select the appropriate grade level when booking the session.)

4. The final puzzle will require students to work together to solve math questions and decipher the answers into the final passcode to open the secret vault.
