Program Description and Timeline
Main Idea and Learning Goal:
Students will learn that a dialect is a form of a language that is specific to a certain geographical region or social group. They will learn that dialects have rules, that a person can be fluent in more than one dialect, and that each of them is fluent in one or more dialects. Students will analyze the spoken word poetry piece “Broken English” by Jamilla Lyiscott to explore the idea of facility of expression in multiple dialects, consider where in their lives they employ different ways of speaking, and consider ways in which, as Lyiscott says: “They mix it up because they can.”
Intended Audience:
Grades 9-12. 5-32 students. At least one school employee/supervising adult MUST participate.
Timeline:
Planet Word programs are adaptable and highly-participatory and may change depending on
student engagement. A rough outline of the hour-long program follows:
15 mins - Dialect game – pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar
5 mins - Introduction to Planet Word/Advance Organizer
5 mins - Activation Questions
10 mins - Linguistic Privilege self-reflection activity
15 mins - Analyze “Broken English” by Jamila Lyiscott
5 mins - Linguistic bias and Language Identity acknowledgement
5 mins - Conclusion
