Program Details

Format

This presentation uses a photo slideshow to guide participants through the history of the Prohibition era in the United States and its role in the rise of organized crime. Along the way, the presenter highlights historical artifacts related to the time period.

Major topics include the rise of the temperance movement and the passage of the 18th Amendment, the rise of organized crime, bootlegging, rumrunning, the enforcement of Prohibition, and the law's eventual repeal.

Objectives

1. Participants will learn how and why Prohibition occurred in the United States.
2. Participants will understand the conditions that led to the rise of organized crime in the United States.
3. Participants will examine ways in which the law failed, and analyze why Prohibition was eventually repealed.
