Program Details

Format

This presentation uses a photo slideshow to guide participants through the history of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Along the way, the presenter asks questions about the images and historical artifacts presented. This presentation relies on primary source analysis and visual thinking and observation skills. Finally, the educator leads the participants in an activity to analyze bullets.

Major topics include the passage of the 18th Amendment, the social and cultural changes of the 1920s, the rise of organized crime, the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, the examination of the event, firearm examination and bullet analysis.

Objectives

1. Participants will learn about the events of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and make predictions about how the crime was investigated.
2. Participants will explore the field of firearm examination and conduct their own observations about bullet lands and grooves.
3. Participants will develop an understanding about how crimes were investigated a century ago and compare and contrast methods to the present day.
