Why is St. Patrick’s Day such a widely celebrated holiday, and what makes the Irish such a fierce and proud people? In this e-field trip students look through the Irish perspective and catch a glimpse of what the Irish have endured, why St. Patrick is such an important figure to them, and how Celtic culture has sustained their spirit.

In the process, we will try out Irish dancing, sing Irish songs, and learn about Celtic myths that reach back over two millennia to a time before Christianity.

In this program, students will go beyond familiar associations of leprechauns, shamrocks and green beverages to appreciate and understand how St. Patrick drove the Druids from Ireland, the nature of the music that sprang from the harp of Celtic god The Dagda, what occurred on the Hill of Tara, and how the Irish Wheel is a symbol akin to those of Native American cultures. Unraveling the mysterious knots of Irish culture and legacy makes for a fascinating adventure of discovery!

About the presenter:
Marc Kotz began dancing and acting in his early teens, and since that time has performed, choreographed, and directed performance internationally. He earned a B.A. in Performing Arts from Empire State College in NYC, and an M.F.A. in Dance/Choreography from the University of Iowa (as an Iowa Arts Fellow). He has taught for a total of 12 years at the college level; worked in the field of Living History and Interpretation since 2003; and currently directs Born 2 Move Movement Adventures, LLC a company offering educational, health/fitness, and artistic programs and projects utilizing movement as an essential medium. Mr. Kotz is fully insured as dance/yoga/movement teacher.

Marc delights in venturing to other cultures and times through the means of dance, theater, music and educational exploration. His career has taken him around the world, delving into diverse cultures and artistic disciplines. He has performed in numerous dance and theater forms, collaborated on two dozen plays/musicals/operas and has choreographed and directed ten concert-length productions. Marc received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa as an Iowa Arts Fellow, has taught all ages from pre-school to the aged, and is fully insured as dance/yoga/movement teacher.

“Through Irish Eyes & Feet: Celebrating St. Patrick & Celtic Culture” is a highly interactive and reflective program involving dancing, singing, historical and cultural learning/analysis as well as critical thinking.

1. The program starts off with a performance and teaching of St Patrick’s Day jig to garner interest and establish cultural connection.
2. The history of St. Patrick is explored and discussed in relation to Irish culture and history leading to an overview and experiential learning about Celtic culture.
3. Learn and participate in a group Irish dance (like a reel)
4. We return to the more recent Irish history by learning about the great potato famine of 1845, mass emigration from Ireland, and the initial plight and experience of the Irish in the United States.
5. Contrasts/comparisons between Irish- Americans and Native Americans are made on a cultural as well as a socio-political level.
6. The program wraps up with a sing along of “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” underscoring the long and arduous struggle Irish-Americans have undergone and the temerity they possess to be who they are today. In sum, the outcome will be to help students understand why St. Patrick’s Day can and should mean more than a good excuse for a party!


The participant will:
•Gain a deeper understanding of the Irish and their historic precedents and legacy
•Become familiar with the longevity and prevalence of Celtic culture through world history
•Appreciate commonalities, differences and connections between different world religions, specifically Christianity, Celtic Mythology/Paganism, and Native American religion.
•Learn an Irish dance
