Your students will work as a team of specialists helping NOAA’s Extreme Weather Response Unit in this scenario. Each specialist becomes a meteorological expert and monitors weather data to accurately forecast atmospheric conditions. The students use a high-tech computer interface to monitor temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed, and wind direction. Hydrologists in your classroom will also monitor watershed conditions and flood stages of rivers, creeks, and streams to predict possible flooding conditions and to alert residents in dangerous areas.

Program Details

Format

During the e-Mission: WV STORM, students work as a team of specialists from NOAA’s Extreme Weather Response Unit. Each team has meteorological experts in monitoring weather data to accurately forecast atmospheric conditions. The teams consist of atmospheric meteorologists who monitor temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed and direction and hydrologists who monitor watershed conditions and flood stages of rivers, creeks, and streams to predict possible flooding conditions.

Students use an intricate web interface that allows them to analyze the data and compare region maps and forecast maps.

Objectives

Analyze weather data to forecast upcoming weather events; issue severe storm watches and warnings as needed; monitor rivers and streams for possible flood events; issue evacuation orders as needed to protect lives in affected areas.

Region teams work together so that they can provide emergency recommendations to all citizens of the state.
