Animal Senses investigates the many ways animals use their five main senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell, and taste) to survive in their habitats, and demonstrate how animals may use their senses differently than we do. All programs include up close encounters with our education animal ambassadors.

Our availability includes: August 12th through May 13th. Due to conflicts with other onsite programs, Distance Learning programs will be temporarily unavailable during the summer. Tuesday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. If you would like a program outside of this time, please feel free to ask and we will see what we can do for you! Please reserve 3 weeks in advance when possible

Provider's Cancellation Policy

CANCELLATION POLICY: In the event that a program must be canceled due to weather, technical issues, or other circumstances beyond the control of the Zoo or program recipient, the program may be rescheduled at a later date agreeable to both parties for no additional charge (dependent on availability). If cancellation occurs for any other reason than listed above, a cancellation fee will apply.

RESCHEDULING POLICY: In the event that a program needs to be rescheduled for any reason other than those listed above, then the Zoo must be notified at least three weeks before the date of the program. We do not reschedule inside the three weeks of the scheduled program date. A rescheduling fee will apply.

REFUND POLICY: Once registration is confirmed, the Greenville Zoo adheres to a no-refund, no-credit policy. If a program is canceled at any time for any reason other than those listed above, no refund or credit will be given. Substitution of another group of participants of the same age is permitted with prior notification given at least three weeks before the date of the program.

Please note, Distance Learning Programs will be unavailable after May 14th and will resume on August 12th. This is due to conflicts with onsite programs occurring during the summer.

Program Details

Format

The Greenville Zoo will lead hands-on activities during the program.

1. Introduce / Review the five main senses (Hearing, Smell, Taste, Touch, Sight)
2. Investigate how the senses can help an animal to survive in the wild
3. Explore each individual sense in depth, focusing on how animals may differ from humans.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
• List the five main senses (Sight, Hearing, Touch, Taste, and Smell)
• Describe at least one way senses help animals to survive (avoid predators, find food, etc.)
• Describe at least one way animals may use their senses differently than we do (echolocation, ‘hearing’ through vibrations, monocular vision, etc.)
