The mission of Denver Botanic Gardens is to connect people with plants, especially plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world, providing delight and enlightenment to everyone. School programs emphasize student-led discovery through a variety of hands-on activities and guided explorations. Programs are cross-curricular and align with Colorado Academic Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

Program Details

Format

1. students will share ideas about why plants are important
2. students will learn about all the needs of a plant
3. we will then review the parts of a plant
4. students will act out the life of a plant
5. we will review the life cycle of the plant we acted out
6. students will learn how to grow a vegetable garden using leftovers they may have at home in their own kitchen
7. if time allows we will talk about how to use each of our 5 senses to safely explore plants
8. time for Q&A

Objectives

• Students will learn plant parts – seed, root, stem, leaves and flower – and their basic functions.
• Students will learn where the parts are located on the plant.
• Students will act out the life cycle of a plant.
• Students will learn how to plant a flower.
• Students will learn how to take care of a plant by putting it in the sun, watering it and keeping it warm.
