Tour the cosmos in the Michigan Science Center's virtual planetarium without leaving your home or classroom! What’s Up? Your Guide to the Night Sky uses planetarium software to view the constellations, stars and planets in the current sky and an exploration of our place in the Milky Way Galaxy. We'll also discuss using the cosmos for navigation and the impact of light pollution on our view of the night sky.

Why ECHO?

Our videoconferencing programs allow you and your
students to participate in highly interactive and fun learning in real time. We
have taken the Next Generation Science Standards and have created programs that
are informative and entertaining. No special hardware is required to bring a
virtual visit to your classroom. A connection can be done with a computer,
webcam, projector and high speed internet. All you need to do is click a link
and the fun begins!

Program Details

Format

This program begins with an introduction to virtual planetarium software, followed by a night sky tour set for the location and date of the booking site. Next, participants will discuss famous stories and mythology about familiar constellations. Finally, students will engage in a discussion of light pollution and humans' effect on the global view of our night sky.

- Explore which stars, constellations, and planets are visible with the naked eye

- Be able to identify familiar sky objects in the current night sky

- Understand how the sky changes over the course of a day, month, and year

- Discuss famous mythological stories for familiar constellations

- Engage in a discussion about light pollution
