Maker Space Build-Along: Stick-eometry! Video Only

by  Playful Engineers

Program image

Using pencils, tape and rubber bands, students make their own kinetic toys that transform from triangles to trapezoids, and from to pentagons, pentagrams, and square-bottom pyramids! Advanced options include cubes, dodecahedrons, and other amazing shapes!

This is a hands-on workshop experience, in which students can work at their own pace, but you also have the opportunity to pause the video so students can catch up. Jay demonstrates how he constructs these fascinating geometric kinetic toys, and discusses their relevancy to practical geometry. Most students should have successfully completed a working model by the end of the class. Please allow time and space during and after, for students to share their skills and knowledge with each other.

Objectives

This class is delivered by video. We encourage teachers to scan through the video before class to clarify materials needs and program format.

Teaching artist Jay Mankita demonstrates how he plays with stick-eometry toys that he has constructed, sharing relevant tie-ins with geometry, and mechanical engineering principals. Students should already be prepared with the materials they need to make their own. (see materials list). Step by step construction follows. Students who 'get it' right away are encouraged to share their skills and knowledge with classmates during the session, and afterwards too, as some students may not have finished the activity before the session ends.
